ABOUT THE COALITION

We believe climate action is everyone’s business.

Small and medium-sized business represent 90% of the global economy and are already being disproportionately harmed by the effects of climate change However, when harnessed at scale, the power of small businesses in combatting further environmental decline cannot be denied.

The Chambers Climate Coalition is grounded in the belief that a practical response to climate change must be rooted in creating enabling regulatory environments where local businesses and communities can feel empowered to take action – without sacrificing their bottom lines.

Since its launch at the 11th World Chambers Congress in 2019, our coalition has attracted support and signatories from a diverse range of chamber members and leaders across the world. Our mission is to create a global forum that offers members actionable, real-world solutions and recommendations on cost-effective, sustainable business practices aligned with Paris targets. In parallel, we act as a trusted partner to multinational businesses and governments in identifying and implementing incentives which support small actors in their supply chains and their communities on their journeys to reduce their environmental impact.

Our grassroots movement provides a unique opportunity to join an insightful, international network of chambers sharing best practices, policies and processes tailored for business needs. Association leaders can directly learn from peers about strategies they are takingto help members simultaneously address climate ambitions while  growing their businesses, all while gaining a seat at the table to influence emerging global policy.

Together, we can drive the transition to a cleaner and more resilient planet.

WHY JOIN?
Making Climate Action Everyone's Business

Climate change threatens our resources and infrastructure and poses a significant challenge to our ability to thrive on the planet. The most widely accepted scientific assessments confirm that mitigating human-induced climate change is the most prudent and responsible course of action we can take to protect our future.

Our coalition supports the Paris Agreement’s overarching objective of “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, recognising that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.”

Building a cleaner world and more durable economies requires a global cooperative effort, as climate solutions must be deployed at a large scale. That’s why the Chambers Climate Coalition believes climate action is everyone’s business and is here to empower local businesses and chambers to drive meaningful change.

As a member of the Coalition, you can expect to:

  • Connect with a community of chambers dedicated to sharing proven and effective best practices and initiatives tailored to local business needs.

  • Leverage collective bargaining power and gain a seat at the table to influence global policy decisions.

  • Celebrate climate action success and support progress of the broader #Chambers4Climate community.

  • Collaborate with public and private entities to support cost-effective climate solutions and policies that work for people and the planet.

  • Be directly involved in the global effort to mainstream climate mitigation into chamber services.

CASE STUDY

Since 2001, when the Agenda 21 of the canton of Geneva started to be implemented, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCIG) has worked to raise awareness among its member companies of the importance of moving towards sustainable development.

To this end, it has forged a fruitful partnership with the Cantonal Office of Sustainable Development and the University of Applied Sciences to create a forum for exchanges, entitled “Sustainable Management Meetings”. These meetings have two objectives: they promote sustainable management and encourage the exchange between companies of best practices.

Over the years, more than 600 companies have taken part in these events, many of which have covered topics related to the environment and climate. Examples include waste management, ecology at work, building, carbon dioxide, industrial ecology or green teams.
